The White Willow (Gwan) Staff
What is this?
The Gwan is fundamentally a tree truck. It's traditional name, Bak Larp Gorn, is Cantonese for White Willow Tree. The tree is grown in the far north of China where the climate is cold and dry, and its wood basically has two uses: scaffolding and martial arts.
For southern-influenced styles, the Gwan is usually two metres long and covered with knots. For right-handers, the thicker end is held in the left hand and the right-hand index finger points up to the tapered tip.
The characteristic
The Gwan is a long-range weapon that acts as an extension of the body. Its purpose is to transfer power from the body to the tip of the weapon. In Ging Mo Kune, this weapon has eight uses.
The rhyme
Till, Tarn, Dim, Nart
Larn, So, Churng, Gark
Flick, fling, point, press
Deflect, Sweep, Poke, Block
When do I need it?
Ideally, from day one. The Gwan is a go-to tool for many in kung fu training, with most consistently practicing with one.
