What is this?

The Dai Doe (sometimes called Big Sabre) is one of the fundamental weapons used in ancient times. It’s also known by its modern name, Low Yip Doe, which translates to Willow Leaf Sabre. Willow Leaf Sabre also refers to a similar broad sword, which is a hybrid knife-sabre weapon.

Made of spring steel, a Dai Doe is a single-edged weapon about one metre long. Dai Does used in Ging Mo Kune are hand beaten over and over in kilns. Starting at 5mm thick, the steel is heated, beaten and cooled until paper thin. Looking down the edge of the blade, you’ll notice the blade tapers from thick at the handle to thin at the tip, which gives it a unique sounding capacity.

In Ging Mo Kune, you would typically hold the Dai Doe in your dominant hand, towards the guard. Your support hand is then free to guide, deflect and control the opposing defence.

The characteristic

The Dai Doe is a mid-range weapon designed to enhance the transfer of power from the body to the tip of the weapon. When successful, the weapon will sound loudly.

When do I need it?

You can enjoy using a Dai Doe once you feel comfortable with the Gwan or when you commence Yellow Belt content, whichever comes sooner.

Pro-tips

Before storing, wipe your Dai Doe dry of sweat (from all your diligent practice!) and gently wipe over your blade and guard with a light-grade oil. Store it flat or leaning against the wall with the handle facing downwards.

When travelling with your Dai Do to and from class, cover it in a bag or wrap it in a large towel to prevent bodily harm. There is no reason to brandish your Dai Doe in a public setting — we must always be considerate to the public, who may be frightened and not understand that it is just a training weapon. Additionally, it’s a good idea to consult your local police station for clarification around laws pertaining to ownership of this training tool.
