About

Skills For Life (SFL) is a Vocational Education & Training (VET) program designed to expand opportunities and pathways for young people aged between 16 and 24 years old to improve post compulsory educational outcomes in line with the Government's goals and targets, as well as address the employment needs of the sport and recreation industry in Australia.

SFL is based on the ancient disciplines of Kung Fu.  The program is designed specifically to provide an enjoyable, motivating and rewarding educational experience ensuring engagement of our young people.

For this particular purpose, SFL has been identified in Western Australia by the Department of Education and Training, Participation Directorate District Managers and Participation Coordinators, Department of Child Protection and numerous organisations that care for our young people who are at risk of / or who have disengaged from formal education, as a special program that offers a unique approach to engagement.

What sets this program apart from other engagement programs is the learning and experience through the martial arts discipline.   The experience in the art evolves around Self Respect, Self Awareness, Self Disciple, Determination, Truth and Love for Self.  The Units of Competency (UOCs) are interwoven into the fabric of the kung fu experience, engaging the young people in a unique experience of learning.  They take ownership of their learning and in our experience share openly with their colleagues free of judgement.

The result of years of refinement and enhancement is an engagement program based on physical exercise and discipline that allows the students to have ownership over their education and training process empowering them with the necessary resilience to return to  education (school / training) or the mandatory work ready skills needed to transition into employment.

Stereotypical communication boundaries are dissolved between the young people as they attend each lesson.  Confidence grows, self esteem develops and a greater understanding of themselves continually evolves throughout the program with the ultimate goal being that each person develops the skills to reflect and observe themselves hence having the choice to interrupt patterns of behaviour and the courage to follow through.
